Dr. Deborah Donahue-Keegan is the Associate Director of the Tisch College Initiative on Social-Emotional Learning and Civic Engagement (SEL-CE) Initiative at Tufts University, and a Lecturer in Tufts Department of Education. One of the SEL-CE initiative’s primary activities is a year-long faculty development program; Deborah designed and oversees this year-long program, offered in partnership with the Tufts Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching (CELT). In its third year, this faculty program aims to help Tufts faculty develop a deep understanding of the vital role of social-emotional learning to cultural competence and civic engagement, as well as the skills needed to efficaciously engage in and promote constructive dialogue with students and colleagues. Her current research and teaching focus on social-emotional learning (SEL), equity, well-being, and inclusive excellence in education, with a specific focus on faculty professional development in higher education settings. A recognized leader in the SEL field, Deborah is a member of the Advisory Board for SEL4US (Social-Emotional Learning Alliance for the U.S.), a national advocacy organization, as well as a member of the SEL4MA (Social-Emotional Learning Alliance for Massachusetts) Steering Committee. She co-founded and now co-leads the Massachusetts Consortium for Social-Emotional Learning in Teacher Education (MA SEL-TEd). Deborah has presented on her SEL-focused research and practice at numerous conferences and thought leader gatherings. She has also authored a number of articles and chapters on SEL and educator professional development. Before coming to Tufts, she was a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Education Department at Wellesley College. She earned her doctorate from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education. For her dissertation research, she conducted a qualitative research study of public high school teachers' efforts to foster socio-moral and civic learning through constructive controversy. Deborah began her career in the education field as a high school teacher, for seven years, beginning in Kingston, Jamaica.

Iris OliverProgram Manager, MicrosoftIris Oliver graduated from Tufts University this past May with a BS in Computer Science. She is really interested in using technology to improve education for all. Iris has worked as a teaching assistant for the Tufts Computer Science Department, and as a STEM Outreach Fellow for the Tufts Center for Engineering Education Outreach. She has also volunteered with Microsoft TEALS to teach CS to high school seniors. In September 2018 Iris co-chaired the Tufts Women in Tech Conference along with Supriya Sanjay, which attracted 250+ attendees and $20,000 in sponsorship funding. Iris will start working full time as a Program Manager with Microsoft in Seattle this September.

jonathan GarlickProfessor, Tufts UniversityJonathan Garlick is Professor at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and Tufts School of Medicine, School of Engineering and Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life. As a research scientist and clinician he has pioneered the use of stem cells for tissue engineering to develop new treatments for oral health, cancer and complications of diabetes to accelerate the discovery and clinical application of new drugs. Jonathan brings dialogues to the college classroom and to public groups to encourage individuals to speak, listen, inquire, and reflect in ways that foster constructive conversation on topics that all too often engender conflict driven by differences in identity, beliefs, or worldview. He has developed dialogue programs across Tufts and has trained faculty, staff and students to facilitate dialogues that have increased their readiness and skill to bring inclusive dialogues to Tufts on topics that tend to divide us. For these efforts, he was awarded a Tufts Distinction Award. As an educator, Dr. Garlick teaches his students to explore the impact of science in their lives as a bridge towards moral responsibility and civic action. As a Senior Fellow at Tufts Tisch College of Civic Life, he leads a national initiative in Civic Science to inform public learning and dialogue about science as a bridge towards personal and civic empowerment on divisive science issues.

Khary Saeed Jones engages film projects that explore the tensions between fiction, memory, and everyday life. His films and collaborations have screened at Sundance, SXSW, MoMA, the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, and many other festivals and venues. Born and raised in Camden, New Jersey, Jones studied at Columbia University (MA, MFA) and Morehouse College (BA), and he is currently a Professor of the Practice in Drama and Film at Tufts University where he teaches storytelling for the screen and advises students developing both scripted and documentary shorts from inception to edit.
As writer-director, his narrative work includes short films Hug (Sundance, SXSW, Palm Springs) and Three and a Half Thoughts (Harlem Intl., Athens Intl. Film + Video) and a forthcoming feature-length film entitled Gumbo. At Tufts she focuses on early career engagement programs, individual career advising, and teaches a course on Personal Career Development. Malakia’s background has included working with traditional and non-traditional aged students at commuter and residential colleges throughout Massachusetts that include Bunker Hill Community College, MIT, Northeastern, and Brandeis University. Malakia is the child of immigrants from Montserrat, West Indies and has a particular interest in studying the college adjustment, academic retention, and career development strategies of first generation college students, women in underrepresented careers and international students.

marissa bynoeMen's Footwear Material Designer, ConverseMarissa is a Footwear Material Designer at Converse and grew up outside of Boston, MA. She graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in 2014 with a BFA in Industrial Design and a minor in French language. After CMU, she went to Savannah College of Art and Design and received a master’s degree in Footwear Design. Upon graduation, she moved back up to Boston to begin her career at Converse as a Material Designer for Men’s footwear.

Michelle grew up near Hershey, PA. Being a first-generation Ghanaian-American and also one of the only black families in town, Michelle has unique experiences and perspectives with implicit bias and racism. After years of little diversity throughout grade school, college and then corporate America, the Starbucks incident motivated Michelle to become a speaker and facilitator on race relations with open and honest dialogue. |

Prior to Ab Initio, Taylor was a member of the Tufts Career Center’s employer relations team. At Tufts, Taylor helped to maintain relationships and attract new employers to recruit Tufts students. Taylor took a lead role in managing the university’s recruiting seasons and online career platform. He was also responsible for planning major events such as the school’s general career fairs.
